In my opinion, the perfect formula for a cute fall outfit is jeans, boots and a jacket. With this outline, you can easily swap in any denim wash, any style of boot and any shirt to go under your jacket, and it still works — the styling options are pretty endless.

And after being a shopping editor for about five years, I think I can say that I have a pretty comprehensive collection of jackets (aka an overflowing closet). And while my closet holds everything from leather jackets to sherpa bombers, there are a few styles that I always come back to. Keep scrolling to get the scoop on my five most-worn fall jackets that I actually own in real life.

1. Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket, $69.90

While I do have super heavy down parkas that I wear in the dead of winter, this lightweight puffy jacket from Uniqlo is my pick for chilly fall days when I want to add another layer without adding bulk. This style is also great for travel because it packs down super small and can literally be stuffed into any tote or suitcase worry-free. Snag it in one of nine colors and sizes XXS to XXL.

2. Rails Steffi, $268

I recently got the Steffi jacket from Rails (which is one of my very favorite fall brands) and have already worn it to lunch with friends, on a date and to run errands. This style is made of a wool blend, so while it’s not overly thick or fully lined, it does keep me warm. I’m partial to this mauve shade because it’s unlike any other jacket I own, but you can also grab it in a pretty blue-and-white plaid.

3. BLANKNYC Suede Moto Jacket, $188

I love my leather jackets, but something about this BLANKNYC Suede Moto style just feels cooler. BLANKNYC has a ton of different suede colors to choose from (including pink and teal), and all of their designs are really well made. I wear this moto jacket over T-shirts and bodysuits with my favorite jeans or leggings and have found it to be a suitable outfit for any occasion, from grabbing coffee to going to a concert.

4. Free People Dolman Quilted Knit Jacket, $198

You’ve probably seen this quilted jacket from Free People all over your social media, but I’m here to tell you that it’s truly worth the hype. This 100% cotton jacket is wonderfully oversized and the perfect thing to wear on top of a hoodie or a bulky sweater. It also comes in a ton of colors. However, I will say that this jacket runs pretty large, so if you don’t want it to be too big, definitely order one size down.

5. Old Navy Oversized Soft-Brushed Overcoat, $79.99

Credit: Old Navy

I’ll admit that this is not the exact overcoat that I have from Old Navy — but it’s extremely close. Honestly, I had to include this style because the one I have is a few seasons old and is no longer sold, but I wear it so often that a similar option from the retailer had to make my list. This overcoat design goes with everything and is a great everyday style. Plus, at under $80, it’s super budget-friendly.
